I hope another supermarket takes that space. I think the Waldbaums takeover played a huge factor though. You'd think with the technology today, creating a facial ID recognition system to alert security to shoplifters (most are repeat offenders), stores would be able to stop losses. It's just a shame that the police department and community can't keep these thugs from ruining a needed place to shop for everyone else.
While Freeport will be somewhat of a Food Desert, options are available in nearby towns. The Merrick Stop & Shop is also only one stop on the train away as well. Whenever Best Market opens in that Waldbaums spot in Merrick it will probably do quite well, fortunately its not too far from where the Freeport Stop & Shop is, it is walkable. Someone told me their rent in Freeport was jacked up as well. Though I still think when Stop & Shop bought Waldbaums in nearby Baldwin Harbor, along with remodeling Merrick, they felt Freeport wasn't needed anymore. Its the old "this is why we can't have nice things" argument. It is such a shame the thugs ruin it for everyone else. BUt do not realize the over-head & how much money the stores put out each and every day. Some people just see customers spending money at these stores. If a store becomes unprofitable on paper they will shut down.
Not sure how much those communities would like armed guards like the banks now need. Guess they did not feel ready to have many armed guards at the stores. I know from inside info (Stop & Shop) that the loss prevention dept had very high rate as well as Oceanside. You're looking at the situation through your WEIRD (western, educated, intelligent, rich, democratic) goggles and coming up with solutions that would work for you, not the poor. They don't want to order a salad and water at McDonald's, they want a 20-piece, fries, and a large Coke. They don't want to eat broccoli, they want to eat fried chicken. Poor people aren't fat because they don't have access to farmers markets, it's because they make bad choices either because they are uneducated, dumb, feckless, or all of the above.
Take away EBT at fast food restaurants, and create a list of healthy products that dollar stores must carry (and sell) in order to maintain EBT sales. Offer the farmers a small stipend for each 100 pounds of produce and fruit they sell in order to bring the cost down. Give the farmers the ability to accept EBT payments as easily as Dollar Tree can. They want to stop 'food deserts' and decrease 'food poverty'? Encourage a weekly farmers market in these communities. Why spend time at the supermarket shopping, lugging bags home, and then preparing actual meals when you can waddle up to the Golden Arches an get served in minutes? Seeing as how fast food joints and dollar stores (with their cheap, unhealthy quick 'food') accept EBT, it has only made the problem worse by promoted poor food choices and obesity. Throw a Whole Foods or whatever up in the ghetto and here's what happens:ġ) Community fights you opening because they're afraid of gentrification.Ģ) If you open up, and no one shops there because they don't sell grape soda and cheese doodles, nor will the cashier ring up your beer and lotto tickets up as food like the guy at the bodega does so you can pay with EBT.ģ) Store closes. Which is partly why they are poor to begin with. are cheap and healthy, but poor fat people aren't buying that - they're passing right by that and buying crap because they have poor self control. And that's not even what John is complaining about there are actually supermarkets with all kinds of food in them, he just doesn't like that the customers don't speak English and it smells like ingredients he doesn't use in his own kitchen.Īnd healthy foods don't cost more than processed junk.
